Suspect Arrested After Assaulting Former Girlfriend
A Stayton man is being held in the Marion County Jail following an attack on a former girlfriend Sunday evening.
At 11:06pm, deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home in the 17000 block of Fern Ridge Road SE, east of Stayton. The resident reported a partially clothed female had come to their house claiming she had been assaulted. The resident called 911, and provided the victim clothing and assistance.
Deputy Andrew Derschon arrived and questioned the 21-year old victim. She told Derschon that she’d agreed to meet a former boyfriend for dinner, but that he’d instead driven her to a remote area east of Stayton where he attempted to rape her. She fought with the suspect, and during the struggle was cut with a knife belonging to the suspect. Derschon noted that the victim had other signs of being assaulted. She also reported that during the struggle, the suspect took her cell phone away from her when she tried to call 911. Ultimately, she was able to escape on foot. She hid in some bushes until the suspect left, and then ran about ½ mile to the home of the caller to get help.
The suspect, Martin Gomez-Garcia, 27, was later arrested at his home in Stayton. He is charged with Kidnapping, Assault, Coercion, Strangulation, Menacing, and Interfering with Making a Police Report. Gomez-Garcia is being held without bail and is due in court at 3:00pm, 01/09/12.
The victim was sought treatment on her own for her injuries. Her identity is not being released at this time.
Sgt. Don Sweet, along with Deputies Hunter, Bernards, Ferron, Barber assisted at the scene.
Detectives Mathieu LaCrosse and David White from our Criminal Investigation Unit were also called to assist with the follow up investigation.
